Understanding Analytical Documentation

What a certificate of analysis records, what its scope is, and how to find the one that describes the material in front of you.

PepLine publishes one class of document: a certificate of analysis, issued per lot. This describes what it records, what it does not, and how to find the one that covers the material in front of you.

Certificate of Analysis

A certificate of analysis records the analytical values reported for a specific lot of material. Its scope is that lot and nothing else. Two lots of the same catalog number have two separate certificates, and a certificate for one lot says nothing about another.

When reading one, the first thing to confirm is that the lot identifier on the document matches the lot identifier printed on the container in front of you. If those do not match, the document is not describing your material.

Searching by lot

The most direct route to a certificate is the lot identifier printed on the container label. Enter it in the COA Library lot field; the laboratory’s own reference from the face of the certificate finds it too. If the lot returns nothing, confirm the identifier against the label, then try the catalog number instead — a certificate may not yet be published for that particular lot.

  • Lot identifier — the fastest path to a specific document.
  • Catalog number — returns every documented lot for that entry.
  • Document type — narrows a long result list to one document class.
